The Control page is used to start and stop Traffic Sentinel processes.

Topics:

What is the "Data Collector" process?

The data collector processes perform network discovery, SNMP polling, process flow records and record the traffic history. The data collector process is running if the Start button is disabled (and the Stop button is enabled).

How do I restart the Data Collection process?

Click on the Stop button, then click on the Yes button to confirm that you want to stop data collection. Wait approximately 20 seconds before clicking on the Start button to restart data collection.

Why would I restart the Data Collection process?

Normally you should leave the data collection processes running. Stopping data collection will result in the loss of data. However, there are some configuration settings that require that the data collection processes are restarted before they take effect (see File>Configure).

What is the "Web Server" process?

The web server process refers to the process serving web pages associated with Traffic Sentinel. If the web server process is not running you will not be able to access Traffic Sentinel through a web browser. You will need to log in to the server and manually start the Traffic Sentinel processes using the command:

/sbin/service inmsfd restart

If this does not work you might also need to make sure that httpd is also running using the command:

/sbin/service httpd restart

What is the "Discovery" process?

The discovery process runs periodically to discover new network devices specified in Agent Range sections in the configuration (see File>Configure).

Why would I want to "Scan for Agents"?

The discovery process will run periodically and pick up new configuration settings. You might want to run discovery manually if you have just added a new Agent Range to the configuration and want to ensure that new devices are promptly discovered (see File>Configure). Click on the Scan for Agents button to trigger a new discovery sweep.
